Topsoe to supply SynCOR Ammonia tech for a greenfield blue-ammonia fertilizer complex in Nebraska

Topsoe has signed a technology agreement with J Westling & Co (JWC) to supply its SynCOR Ammonia™ technology, proprietary equipment, and catalysts for a greenfield low-carbon ammonia plant in Gothenburg, Nebraska. The July 9 announcement names the plant as part of JWC’s fully integrated “Project Meadowlark” fertilizer complex.

The ammonia unit is designed for roughly 500 short tons per day of blue ammonia from natural gas feedstock, feeding downstream production of about 365,000 tonnes per year of urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and 140,000 tonnes per year of ammonium thiosulfate (ATS). First operations are targeted for 2029. Topsoe describes this as the first deployment of its SynCOR Ammonia technology dedicated to fertilizer production, rather than to ammonia as an energy carrier.

Why the reforming choice matters for the study

Most operating ammonia plants use conventional two-step reforming: a fired tubular steam-methane reformer followed by an air-fired secondary reformer. SynCOR replaces that front end with oxygen-fired autothermal reforming (ATR). For a process safety team, that substitution changes the hazard register in ways worth flagging early.

Oxygen-fired ATR introduces a high-purity oxygen service into the flowsheet — an air separation unit, oxygen piping, and a burner where oxygen and hydrocarbon meet at high temperature and pressure. Oxygen-service hazards (material compatibility, cleanliness for oxygen service, ignition and burnout risk), soot management, and burner temperature-excursion scenarios all sit at the center of the study rather than at its edges. The synthesis loop, ammonia refrigeration and storage, and the downstream UAN and ATS trains each carry their own well-known hazards: ammonia toxicity, the oxidizer characteristics of nitrate solutions, and the hydrogen sulfide and reactivity considerations around thiosulfate chemistry.

A greenfield build in a light-footprint region

Because Project Meadowlark is greenfield and fully integrated, the safety-study pipeline runs the full sequence: HAZID early, design-stage HAZOPs through FEED and detailed design, SIL determination and verification, and facility-siting and consequence work for the ammonia inventory near an agricultural community. There is no existing site PHA to revalidate — everything is studied from a blank sheet.

The location is also notable. The US ammonia-synthesis base is concentrated on the Gulf Coast and in a handful of Corn Belt sites; a new synthesis complex in Nebraska brings design and operating know-how into a region where that footprint is comparatively thin. JWC frames the economics around eliminating the $100–$120 per tonne cost of trucking ammonia up from the Gulf.
